Austin Polished Concrete Floors

Can you polish an existing concrete floor?

Can you polish an existing concrete floor? Often yes. Here's what we check first, from old glue and coatings to cracks, and what photos can't tell us.

Talk with us about your floor

What we need to look at

Before you polish an existing concrete floor, these four things decide how it turns out. If your slab checks out, here's how our concrete polishing in Austin usually runs.

What's been on the floor

Old tile, carpet, glue, past coatings, and the curing compound builders spray on fresh concrete all change the prep work we plan. Even after the residue comes off, you may still see the outline of old flooring.

How sound and hard the concrete is

A soft top layer, pits, cracks and patches can all change your finish. Depending on the slab, we may test it or polish a trial area to see what it will do.

How flat it is and how much stone shows

High spots can show more stone before the grinder even reaches the low spots. Polishing won't level a slab. And we can't promise the stone will show evenly.

Moisture and use

Tell us about any damp areas, what might spill on the floor, and whether you want a protective sealer on top. Depending on the slab and the product, we may run a moisture test, because polishing won't fix a moisture problem.

When another finish may suit you better

  • If you can't live with visible patches or old flooring outlines, we can talk through an overlay or coating once we've seen the floor.
  • If the slab is moving or you suspect a structural problem, have the right expert check it before you plan cosmetic work.
  • An indoor polish isn't made for outdoor areas that get wet, so pick a system built for that use and the grip it needs.

Take a useful set of photos

  • One wide view of each room and doorway.
  • Close shots of cracks, patches, glue and damp or stained areas.
  • A photo taken low to the floor so we can see reflections and rough or uneven spots.
  • Rough floor size, what's on it now, the finish you want and any limits on getting in.
  • Send only the floor photos. Leave out private papers and people where you can.

Start a quick project brief or send a link to your photo folder.
